NEW YORK (AP) — A longtime New York City advocate for the legalization of medical marijuana and a veteran of the Youth International Party — or Yippies — is accused of money laundering.
Prosecutors in Coles County in rural Illinois say Dana Beal was arrested last week in the town of Mattoon, about 170 miles south of Chicago.
Prosecutors say police found the 61-year-old transporting bags with more than $150,000 in cash.
Beal is being held on $250,000 bail. Fellow Yippie A.J. Weberman says Beal told friends he was traveling with the cash because he intended to finance a clinic to study ibogaine. The chemical can be used to counter addiction.
